S.1669/H.R.2870 "Healthy Schools Act of 2007"

The “Healthy Schools Act of 2007” to address one of our nation’s greatest public health challenges: assuring accessible, affordable, quality health care for low income and underserved children and adolescents.  The bill, introduced by Senator Stabenow (D-MI), along with six original co-sponsors and Representative Townes (D-NY) provides a sustainable resource for our nation’s network of over 1,700 school-based health centers (SBHCs) through a commonsense approach that strengthens Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Congressional Briefing on School Health Centers

January 31, 2007.  Members of the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care met today with Congressional staff at a series of informational briefings to explain the role of school-based health care and discuss new legislation that would expand the federal health care safety net to include school-based health centers.  More than 100 Senate and House offices were represented.

The theme of the briefings, Fulfilling the Needs of Children and Families in Crisis: SBHCs as Frontline Responders, focused on how school based health centers help students and their families in times of crisis, such as a sudden natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina, an emerging public health epidemic like childhood obesity, or a rise in the number of children living on military bases with a parent at war.

S. 600 SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH CLINIC ESTABLISHMENT ACT of 2007

The School-Based Health Clinic Establishment Act would authorize a grant-based program for the operation and development of SBHCs, which provide comprehensive and accessible primary health care services to medically underserved children youth and families; improve the physical health, the emotional well-being and academic performance of such populations; and work in collaboration with schools to integrate health into the overall school environment.
