ABSTRACT TITLE

Oral Health Care for Students - School-Based, Student-Focused Preventive and Restorative Care

ABSTRACT SUMMARY

This workshop will examine the history and success of the oral health program in Rockford, IL and its three model approach to care: partnership, private practice, and on-location. Attendees will learn how to help students by: • Developing a school-based dental program that helps students with restorative dental needs • Eliminating barriers to receiving care • Reducing the number of (urgent) restorative needs • Improving oral health education.

ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION

Oral health issues are a constant problem among students. School districts often have preventive dental programs that help recognize disparities, but lack active, substantial restorative measures to help students improve their oral health. This workshop takes a look at the dental program developed over the past four years in Rockford, IL and the successful reduction of oral health needs among students as a result of a collaboration of community leaders, for-profit private entities, and not-for-profit federal, state, and county groups. Presenters will showcase restorative dental care through three school-based models: partnerships, private practice, and on-location. The partnership model puts the screening entity with another local provider for restorative care. The private practice model utilizes the efforts of a private dentist screening a school, then providing restorative care at their office. On-location models provide for both the screenings and restorative care to be complete at the school. Also addressed will be a variety of barriers to care, including developing partnerships, transportation, obtaining consent, covering costs, case management, languages, creating a universal “scoring” system to gauge and triage need, and tracking students’ progress, among others. Attendees will walk out of this workshop with much of the necessary knowledge and tools needed to develop and implement a successful student-focused dental program.
