An Integrated Approach to Treating Adolescent Depression in a SBHC: Hurt to Heal
ABSTRACT SUMMARY
Integration of depression guidelines into a SBHC program: a focus on screening, diagnosis and comprehensive treatment options. A multidisciplinary approach which includes the parent, school, mental health and the primary care provider will be discussed. Treatment includes brief intervention, medication, psycho education, and evidence-based psychotherapy.
ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION
This session will review the epidemiology of adolescent depression, diagnostic criteria for depressive disorders, utilization of screening tools, and treatment options within a SBHC. There will be an emphasis on the treatment of depression with a review of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, including evidence based psychotherapy models. Particular attention will be paid to how to partner with parents, the school, and mental health colleagues as a means of providing integrated and comprehensive care. As youth with depression are at greater risk for suicide, we will briefly review how we assess for suicide utilizing our suicide assessment model. The format will follow the structure of the medical guidelines that we developed for our program and will highlight interventions that can be done by a primary care provider.
