ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION

In Colorado, alongside a state-wide initiative to expand access to Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) though Title X clinics, Denver School-Based Health Centers (SBHC) also gained permission to provide contraception. However, for some SBHC gaining permission to dispense contraception is not the only obstacle they face. Due to payment issues and confidentiality concerns, finding ways to fund contraception methods can be challenging. However, clinics have found creative ways to help young men and women access contraception. Some have limited days they provide family planning services, some contract with outside organizations to come in and others only write prescriptions, leaving it up to their adolescent patients to find their way to a pharmacy. Presenters will demonstrate financial models to fund family planning services. Specifically, the pros and cons to using Title X funding and the challenges of finding and using private dollars to purchase methods. Confidentiality issues related to Medicaid and private insurance, 340B pricing and the benefits of dispensing on-site verses writing prescriptions will also be discussed. Participants will leave this session with tools and a plan of how they will fund family planning services in their SBHCs.
