ABSTRACT TITLE

Eye to Eye – Discussing Sensitive Topics with Youth

ABSTRACT SUMMARY

Eye to Eye is a youth-led training by the Oregon School-Based Health Alliance's Statewide Youth Action Council which helps bridge the communication gap between SBHC providers and teens. Eye to Eye aims to train providers to communicate better with their teen patients and maintain their trust in a two-part workshop. In Part A providers will interview standardized adolescent patients and receive feedback. In Part B youth will discuss the importance of confidentiality. Providers will work directly with their target population and benefit from the insight that trained teens can offer.

ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION

Based on the highly effective Adolescent Health Care Communication Project, this training is led by the Oregon School Based Health Alliance's Youth Action Council and is done in two parts. Part A is a hands-on session that gives health care providers an opportunity to practice their interpersonal skills as youth trainers role-play a teen "character" presenting issues common to their peers. After performing their characters the youth trainers offer feedback to the providers on the questions asked, body language, listening skills, information provided, and confidentiality, along with other important forms of communication Part B youth discuss the importance of confidentiality, a non-judgmental attitude, and body language and speech that resonate with teens. Both sections of Eye to Eye were created to put adolescents in control, as workshop facilitators and standardized patients. Through these two sections, school-based health center providers gain the opportunity to work directly with their target population, and benefit from the insight and advice that trained teens can offer. In addition teens learn how to access better health care. Eye to Eye can either be one 180-minute preconference workshop or two 75-minute workshops.
