ABSTRACT TITLE

The Right to an Education: the role of school health services in supporting unaccompanied immigrant students

ABSTRACT SUMMARY

In 2014 an unprecedented number of unaccompanied youth entered US schools, and school health centers have been at the forefront of their care. Learn about one County’s coordinated response and emerging national best practices for screening, referral, and school-based physical and mental health care of new immigrants.

ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION

In 2014, over 70,000 young people migrated to the United States from the northern triangle of Central America without a parent or guardian, were released by immigration authorities to US sponsors and enrolled in US schools. Most newcomer youth are not eligible for coverage under the Affordable Care Act, and are reporting high rates of trauma suffered before and during migration. This expert panel will discuss the conditions that impelled this unprecedented increase in youth immigrants, the challenges faced by both newcomer students, and school health care systems, and a coordinated response in one County with an extensive SBHC network. Organized responses to addressing physical and mental health needs will be discussed. The panel will address the role of a County health department in marshalling traditional and innovative sources of funding for the care of unaccompanied minors. Presenters will discuss what is known and not yet known about this unique population, and will provide resources for legal assistance, and best practices for mental health and physical health care.
