ABSTRACT TITLE

Working Outside the Clinic Walls: How SBHCs Can Take on School-wide Health and Wellness

ABSTRACT SUMMARY

Learn about potential challenges and opportunities in planning and implementing school-wide population health initiatives focused on decreasing obesity, improving socio-emotional health, and promoting staff wellness. Presenters will share data from the Hallways to Health learning collaborative’s first year and SBHC staff will describe their on-the-ground experiences and lessons learned. Participants will leave this session with innovative, tested strategies for overcoming common challenges faced by SBHCs that have implemented population health programs in their schools.

ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION

School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) are uniquely situated at the intersection of education and health. During this presentation, you will hear three perspectives on how SBHCs move beyond their clinical walls into the school hallways to impact the health and wellness of students, school employees, and their families. Participants will hear the compelling stories, experiences, and themes from staff participating in School Based Health Alliance’s Kaiser Permanente-funded Hallways to Health initiative and Action for Healthy Kids’ Game On! Putting Policies into Practice Program that took place in Chicago Public Schools. Participants will learn about: 1) an analysis of qualitative and quantitative data collected from SBHC staff that participated in the Hallways to Health quality improvement initiative; 2) lessons learned from SBHC staff and school wellness team members, facilitating an understanding of the experiences from their school-wide efforts to prevent obesity, promote social-emotional health, and support staff wellness; and 3) how each participant can apply the learnings from these initiatives in order to develop effective strategies for planning and implementing similar initiatives that enhance the intersection of health and education. Participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of the collaboration it takes to bring SBHCs and health/wellness and educational partners together into a meaningful and intentional partnership resulting in an increased capacity to implement school health and school wellness initiatives.
