ABSTRACT TITLE

Bright Futures for Adolescents: What’s New in 2015?

ABSTRACT SUMMARY

Bright Futures is the recommended preventive care standard for children and youth and patient-centered medical home recognition. Through case examples and discussion this workshop will focus on implementing updated and new components of Bright Futures with adolescents: AAP's 2014 Recommendations for Preventive Pediatric Health Care (Periodicity Schedule) and inclusion of both strength-based and risk assessment approaches to screening for alcohol and drug use, depression, and STI/HIV screening during the adolescent preventive services visit.

ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION

Implementing Bright Futures: A Strength-based Approach to Working with Adolescents and Young Adults The Bright Futures initiative is an evidence-informed, national health promotion and disease prevention program that uses a developmentally-based approach to address the healthcare needs of children and youth. Bright Futures is the preventive care component of the patient-centered medical home. The Affordable Care Act designates that Bright Futures will be covered with no copy for children with “new” private insurance. Resources include disease prevention and health promotion guidelines, tools, and other materials that address the needs of children, from birth through early young adulthood. Bright Futures also provides anticipatory guidance and discussion points to help clinicians and their staff effectively communicate with patients and families. Using measurement, office systems change strategies, previsit questionnaires, documentation forms and patient handouts, the Bright Futures implementation team has identified ways to help practitioners implement these guidelines in a busy clinical setting. Using case examples, presentation and discussion, this workshop will focus on using these practical strategies and tools to implement several components of Bright Futures in adolescent preventive services visits: 1) The AAP's 2014 Recommendations for Preventive Pediatric Health Care (Periodicity Schedule) regarding assessment of alcohol and drug use, depression screening, and STI/HIV screening during the adolescent preventive services visit. 2) The use of a strength-based approach. This includes identifying the adolescent’s strengths as well as their health risk behaviors and using a shared decision-making strategy when a change is needed. A strong correlation exists between health risk behaviors and the presence of assets or protective factors in the lives of school age children and youth. Strength-based approaches engender mutual respect and trust laying the foundation for strong relationships with patients and their families. This workshop will focus on using these practical strategies and tools to implement several components of Bright Futures in adolescent preventive services visits. This workshop is designed to provide practitioners with ideas, strategies and tools for implementing preventive services guidelines for adolescents in ways that are efficient, feasible, and measurable.
