Arts-Informed Approaches to Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
ABSTRACT SUMMARY
Complementary forms of therapy, such as art therapy and mindfulness based stress reduction, have contributed to an integrated holistic approach at Centennial High School (Fort Collins, CO). Program evaluation from 2014 supports the combination of art making and mindfulness based exercises as an effective means to reduce stress, lower aggression, and improve concentration. A review of related evidence-based literature will be covered in addition to the expressive therapies continuum.
ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION
Alternative school settings provide a rich environment for exploring complementary forms of services. Since 1993, the Centennial High School (CHS) Health and Wellness Center has been providing specialized services for students to stay physically and mentally healthy, as one of 55 school-based health centers (SBHC) in the state of Colorado. This holistic approach is also central the CHS Discovery Program, an intensive six week social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum. Complementary forms of therapy, such as art therapy and mindfulness based stress reduction, have contributed to this integrated holistic approach at CHS. Program evaluation from 2014 supports the combination of art making and mindfulness based exercises as an effective means to reduce stress, lower aggression, and improve concentration. The purpose of this workshop is to demonstrate the effectiveness of art-based mindfulness interventions for group and/or classroom settings. A review of related evidence-based literature will be covered in addition to the expressive therapies continuum.
