In this workshop, participants will learn how to address substance abuse by integrating the evidence-based approach, SBIRT (screening, brief intervention, referral to treatment) into their standard daily practice. Particular focus will be paid to the delivery of brief interventions and participants will have the opportunity to hone their skills in motivational interviewing and practice delivering a brief intervention.

ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION

Schools have the potential to play a critical role in the screening, early identification, prevention, and treatment of substance abuse among adolescents. Schools with school-based health centers are in a particularly unique and strategic position to provide comprehensive programs and follow-up to students in their natural ecology. SBIRT (screening, brief intervention, referral to treatment), an evidence-based approach to substance abuse prevention has long been successful with adults, with emerging results demonstrating great effectiveness in its use with adolescents in non-traditional settings such as schools. In this workshop, school-based health professionals will be taught the individual components of SBIRT and its successful implementation with adolescents in the school-based health center setting. Participants will review evidence-based substance abuse screening and assessment tool(s) and learn how to integrate them into their current screening and assessment protocols and practices. Special attention will be paid on conducting brief interventions, where participants will hone their skills in motivational interviewing, delivery of 3-15 minute guided conversations to assist with goal setting and risk reduction strategies, and learn how to incorporate them into well-child and other office visits. They will learn the key techniques and communication styles needed to effectively weave motivational interviewing into the delivery of a brief intervention aimed at addressing alcohol and substance abuse with adolescents. Participants will learn the identification of and formation of linkage agreements with substance abuse treatment programs /agencies in their communities for referrals to treatment and develop strategies for strengthening the referral systems between school staff and the health center to address students with substance use issues. Participants will hear directly from primary care providers currently delivering SBIRT as part of a national initiative to integrate adolescent-specific substance abuse prevention services in school-based health centers. The providers will share their experiences and lessons learned while integrating SBIRT into their standard daily practice and the work flow of their health center. They will discuss successful strategies for ensuring the sustainability of SBIRT, such as proper coding and billing for reimbursement of services, implementing quality improvement processes, and developing a team of SBIRT champions to ensure buy-in from both school and SBHC staff.
