ABSTRACT TITLE

Vaccines: Adolescent Update and Vaccine Refusers

ABSTRACT SUMMARY

The CDC's ACIP updated immunization schedule and catch up schedule was published in September 2014. In this session we will review and discuss the current recommendations for adolescent immunizations, rationale for inclusion, myths and reasons for parent/guardian vaccine consent refusal, and successful strategies for vaccine completion in the SBHC setting.

ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION

Presentation summarizing frequently cited concerns raised by vaccine-hesitant and resistant parents in general practice that lead to delayed vaccine administration or outright refusal, followed by a review of the current evidence that exists regarding these claims and recommendations on how to frame the discussion with parents regarding these often contentious subjects will be presented by Dr. Kerri Leblanc. Keeping current with immunization schedules can be a challenge for busy practitioners. The purpose of this session to be presented by Dr. Chris Kjolhede will be to summarize recent recommendations for vaccines and vaccine delivery to adolescents. There are new recommendations nearly every year. These represent the results of ongoing research on infectious diseases, on vaccine efficacy and on the best means of vaccine delivery. Updates on vaccines for influenza, for human papillomavirus diseases, for the bacteria that cause meningococcal disease, and for protection against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis will be presented. Additionally, the rationale for vaccination against Hepatitis A will be reviewed with respect to adolescents. There also will be a review of the recent literature on approaches to delivering vaccines to adolescents, with an eye to what is germane to school-based health settings. Recommendations will be drawn from the CDC, the AAP and from evidence-based reports in the recognized literature.
