Building a Successful Comprehensive School-Health Program: one puzzle piece at a time
ABSTRACT SUMMARY

Immerse yourself in the mechanics of a successful working comprehensive school-health program, a collaborative partnership among the school district, health systems, and the community at large, serving 43,000 school-aged children and youth in East Baton Rouge Parrish Public School System. In small groups you will engage in interactive discussions with leadership staff, explore each component of the program, select your top priority for improvement or addition to your program, and leave with an action plan to begin the process.

ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION

The Health Centers in Schools (HCS) Leadership group will present an overview of the comprehensive school health program that exists in Baton Rouge, LA. Participants will learn from a multi-disciplinary team how the program components and team members work together to provide holistic care to 43,000 children and teens in Baton Rouge, LA. Each participant group will move through 30-minute mini-presentations around the facets of administration, finance, medical and mental health integrated service delivery, school nursing integration into a holistic wrap-around service delivery system, interaction with parents, community, large health care systems, community physicians and Student Alliance Council. Each participant will leave with a flash drive and binder of materials that can be used in their program. All participants will have the opportunity to apply for support from HCS for 1 year through quarterly conference calls.
