Advancing vibrant, healthy communities and contributing to overall community benefit does not happen by accident. It is a direct result of the leadership capacity of individuals and the organizations they serve. This session is intended to provide participants a perspective on the idea of “everyday leadership capacity,” shifting our thinking from leaders as a uniquely talented and scarce commodity to one of leadership as an asset for creating community change that is abundantly available and accessible by each of us. An asset that can be fostered within a team, organization, coalition, or community. The session covers practical approaches to leadership as it relates to both personal development and the school-based health environment. Participants look at how to unleash their own leadership potential and work in intentional ways to advance community change and improved community health through their own work, partnerships, and affiliations.
The session will introduce and model a leadership inquiry framework which participants can apply to their own work and employ with others. The framework is driven by the following questions
• What do we want leadership capacity to make possible and for whom?
• What conditions will lead to those outcomes?
• How will those conditions be created and what role can I play?
• What is required to support me/us in doing this?
• What steps do I need to take now?
This session will draw on the design and implementation of the School-Based Health Alliance’s inaugural Leadership Fellows Program, providing an opportunity for current Fellows to share their experiences in developing leadership capacity. In so doing, participants will
• Learn how anyone can access leadership and advance transformational success, independent of whether they are someone in a position of authority or not
• Experience the power of simple catalytic questions that focus energy and effort on positive outcomes and change
• Learn how to make this new approach a habit, a practice, and simply a way to approach their work
