ABSTRACT TITLE

The Young Male Well Visit: How to Engage and Improve the Health of Young Males in the School Based Setting

ABSTRACT SUMMARY

Adolescent and young adult (AYA) males are at higher risk than their female contemporaries for a variety of health conditions that are unaddressed. During 2015, SBHA will participate in “The Young Male Well Visit” project. The project will address clinical interventions and how school based health clinics can be more comprehensive sources of health care for AYA males. This workshop will explore this issue through a case study, Q & A and group discussion.

ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION

Adolescent and young adult (AYA) males are at higher risk than their female contemporaries for suicide completion, ADHD diagnosis, substance abuse, homicide, risky behaviors, accidental injury, and certain STIs, among other conditions. While their female contemporaries typically seek health care for purposes of pregnancy prevention and gynecologic care, AYA males do not typically seek out care, nor are the primary health care providers who interact with them knowledgeable about the unique risk factors that AYA males face. In 2012 The Partnership for Male Youth began to address this issue by conducting an extensive literature search and needs assessment consisting of over 80 interviews with health and medical experts across a wide range of disciplines. The assessment confirmed that there is a recognized need for more information among primary health care providers and AYA males themselves about the health care needs of this population. The clinical practice toolkit, Health Provider Toolkit for Adolescent and Young Adult Males, was over a year in development. The effort included clinicians from the fields of reproductive health, mental health, substance abuse, primary care, preventive medicine, and urology, among others, reflecting the fact that many of the disorders AYA males face are closely related to other comorbid disorders. The Partnership for Male Youth (PMY) is a collaborative effort among a variety of health related organizations to disseminate the toolkit and to sponsor projects that advance AY male health. The Toolkit is a web-based, interactive resource for health care providers. It is a dynamic platform, continually updated as new scientific literature is published and as suggestions for improvement are made by health care providers, parents, AYA males, and others. It contains tools, methods, and reference materials for screening and assessment of risk among male patients aged ten through 26 in nine major areas: healthy eating and physical activity, sexual and reproductive health, trauma, substance use disorders, mental health, developmental disorders, sexual biologic basics, normal pubertal concerns, genital abnormalities, and tests and immunizations. The Toolkit is the foundation upon which a number of PMY partners have launched, and will be launching, projects that advance specific areas of AYA male health in two major categories: 1) screening and prevention; and 2) the physical examination, including immunizations. During 2015, the School Based Health Alliance, the American Sexual Health Association and the Heathy Teen Network, in collaboration with the PMY, are undertaking “The Young Male Well Visit” project. The project will address healthy sexuality, the physician examination and immunizations, as well as how venues such as school based health clinics can serve as more comprehensive sources of health care for AYA males.
